Composting is the way to go

Instead of dumping away the organic waste (vegetable and fruit peels, flowers, leaves, etc.) produced in your house daily in some landfill, try composting. Dig a pit in your backyard and start dumping the organic waste in it. When the hole is filled, cover it up with soil. The organic waste will decompose in several weeks and will serve as natural manure for the soil. This is the best way to startorganicfarming in your own backyard!

Plant Trees

Trees provide us with oxygen, shade, and bring rainfall. They are immensely needed to help combat the climate change that is taking the entire world in its grip. Do your part and make it a point to plant trees in your surrounding areas. You can take up the initiative during festivals or special occasions and create a tree plantation drive in your neighborhood. This way, you will encourage others to plant trees for a greener future.

The Vedas sing highly of trees and in ancient India, some trees were particularly looked upon with a great amount of reverence and even worshipped. We know that certain trees are like pipal and ‘jind’ are still worshipped in temples and elsewhere in India. Many trees are associated with great myths, stories and legends of the past heroes and are not allowed to be felled down.

Today even small children know that trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen in the presence of sunlight. The process is known as photosynthesis. Thus they clean the atmosphere and keep a balance of oxygen with other gases.

Even in gurukulas students were made to sit under the tree for their lessons. In modem times Rabindranath Tagore, a man of great vision, started the Shantiniketan University, and made to teach students in the shade of trees. Trees are usefulin several ways.

It is, therefore, of paramount importance that we grow more trees instead of cutting down the existing trees. Of course, sometimes trees which go dry due to severalreasons have to be axed. But fresh trees must be grown in their place.

It is in the fitness of!hings that “Forestation” or “Vanmahotsav” is celebrated every year in India. On this day saplings of trees of various kinds are grown in large numbers all over the country.
